Scott Hommel has announced his candidacy for Commissioner for Lamar County Precinct 4.
Hommel is married. He and his wife, Nancy, are celebrating over 20 years together. They have three children: a daughter(not pictured) who is an attorney in Ohio, a son who is a Corvette and European car Specialist at Precision Automotive here in Paris, and a son who is an EOD, soon to be an Army Master Sergeant ,and has been accepted for the Army’s two-year flight training program for Chinook helicopters. Nancy is a retired special needs Teacher with over 30 years of teaching. She loves being here and that her husband is running for office.
“I retired from BMW USA in 2004.” Hommel said. “Until 2017 I put my many years as a master carpenter to use ‘flipping houses’. . Nancy and I moved here in 2020 from Las Vegas. We love it here. This is our retirement home. As a lifelong conservative it wasn’t long after arriving that I got involved in Texas and local politics. I may not be a lifelong resident of Lamar County, but I have been active in pursuing its best interests since moving here. I bring experience from outside Texas – I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t work in other places I’ve lived. My numerous testimonies before the Texas legislature and the Lamar County Commissioners’ Court on various issues wasn’t because I was the Lamar County Republican Party Chairman, it was because I believed in the causes and that standing up for them was the right thing to do.”
Hommel, an outspoken conservative and former chair of the Lamar County Republican Party, is one of four candidates seeking the position.
“I believe my record and reputation for standing up for the rights and welfare of Lamar County citizens speaks for itself,” Hommel said. “I’ve been a vocal opponent against offering financial support in the form of tax abatements that encourage the installation of environmentally unfriendly wind, solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) sites. When others wouldn’t, I’ve also successfully advocated to the Commissioners’ Court to increase the number of sheriff’s department staff by two deputies and increase their pay, and to add a support staff member to the County Veterans’ Office.”
Hommel has also testified before Texas House subcommittees supporting restricting land purchases in Texas by foreign hostile countries, keeping sexually explicit materials out of Texas schools and boys out of girls bathrooms, locker rooms and sports, and eliminating the property tax.
“Some think the county commissioner’s job is all about the roads. The roads are a very important part of the job, but not all of it,” he said. “With respect to our roads, I propose hiring a county engineer to head a consolidated road department and develop a coordinated maintenance plan. Our county roads are terrible in places, to the point of being unsafe to travel. And, their condition isn’t just about the comfort of driving without wearing out your car’s suspension. They can be dangerous obstacle courses for emergency vehicles in route to fires or ambulances transporting patients to the hospital. There is no consistency between the four departments, to include standardized diesel fuel for vehicles and heavy equipment. There is currently no overall county plan for road maintenance.
“I also support building a new sheriff’s department and jail. The current facility has outlived its useful life and the jail is continually overcrowded. Putting off building a new facility will only be more painful in the future.”
“When it comes to the property tax, I’m 100 percent for eliminating them. However, as an interim step prior to full elimination for all property owners, I support exempting property owners 65 and older, but I don’t support exempting out-of-state businesses and individuals.”
Hommel noted there are several things in the works in Lamar County and Paris that he will not support when elected.
“I don’t support moving the Eiffel Tower downtown,” Hommel said. “I have proposed an alternative solution to the Paris mayor, Paris Economic Development Council, and Judge Brandon Bell. I’m also against establishing an Emergency Services District (ESD) that would raise our taxes by 10% without guaranteeing better service or lower insurance rates. That would mean consolidating the control of all fire departments and their funding under the ESD.
“Finally,” he said, “we have to do our part to deter the rapid expansion of Islam in Lamar County, Texas, and the nation. I am a proud supporter of the Rise. Align. Ignite. Reclaim (RAIR) Foundation that is focused on reclaiming our Republic from the network of anti-American organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). While LCRP Chairman I hosted a presentation by a RAIR representative and public workshop here in Paris addressing the Islamic takeover of Texas. I will do my best to keep Islamic ideology out of our county, and for that matter, the state.”
