The Red River County Sheriff’s Office has released more details about a fatal shooting outside the department last Friday.

Officials say that a man pulled up to the sally port behind the jail and sat in his vehicle smoking with his windows down.

“A deputy coming back from routine patrol saw the vehicle and thought it was off,” said Chief Deputy Quintin Wallace.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the man got out with a gun.

“The officer gave commands to put the gun down but the man refused,” added Wallace.

During this time, a jailer returning to work noticed the situation and called 911 to dispatch more officers.

“Our Sheriff, Jimmy Caldwell, arrived on scene followed by Clarksville PD and all three were giving instructions to the man to put the gun down.”

Wallace said at some point in time, the gentleman went back to the vehicle, retrieved another weapon and now had two weapons, one in each hand.

“After a few minutes of still trying to get him to put the weapons down, he raised one of the weapons toward the deputy and shots were fired.”

The incident was caught on both body and dash camera’s and turned over to Texas Ranger’s who are investigating.

Officers and dispatch involved have all received counseling.

The suspect’s name has not been released at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
