The Slade Baker Memorial Scholarship board has announced it has begun its scholarship process for any Lamar County resident who plans to further their education in the fire services.
“The scholarship has been something we have worked hard to establish and keep self-sufficient,” Paris Firefighter and Slade Baker Memorial Scholarship board member Austin Sugg said. “We want to continue to help Lamar County residents the way Slade did. Our scholarship recipient from last year is currently furthering his education in the fire service to do just that.”
The $2,400 scholarship in honor of Paris Firefighter Slade Baker will be awarded each year to the person chosen by a review board based on public service and a 500-word submitted essay.
The essay’s topic should focus on “public service,” and address what public service means to them and their plans to use a career in public service to improve their community.
To be eligible for the memorial scholarship, the applicant must plan to attend fire academy in 2021 fall and reside in Lamar County. Applicants are also encouraged to submit documentation outlining prior public service.
The scholarship winner will receive the $2,400 toward a State of Texas fire certification.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 15, 2021.
The board asks the application be completed and turned in with the 500-word or less essay to:
- Paris Fire Department
- Attn: Slade Baker Memorial Scholarship
- 1444 N. Main
- Paris, TX 75460
