Avery Bulldogs lost a member of its Avery Class of 2023 this weekend after a tragic car accident on Saturday. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Gene Weaver Gymnasium, and the district will release school at 1 p.m. on Wednesday to allow its staff and students the opportunity to attend the service.
“Sammy (Stringer) was an outstanding young man who was held in high regard by his Bulldog family.” Avery ISD Superintendent Debbie Della Rocco said. “It was rare to see Sammy without a smile on his face, and he was a friend to everyone. Sammy will always hold a special place in the hearts of our students, staff, families and community.”
While the school community processes the tragic news and copes with grief, Avery ISD is offering counseling and bereavement support services to all of its students and staff during the grieving time.
“A student death is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress,” Rocco said. “The entire Avery ISD staff embraces this mission to contribute to our students’ social/emotional development, and we will always be attentive to our students’ emotional needs at school.”
Rocco said for families who feel their children need to speak to a counselor or another adult, “please do not hesitate to call the school and let us know.”
“I believe there is no greater loss than that of a child,” Rocco said. “This loss is felt by many but most assuredly by his family. Please keep Sammy’s family in your thoughts and prayers.”
