Guest Editorial By Dr. Stephen Benson, President, Paris Junior College
This April, colleges across the country celebrate Community College Month—a time to recognize the vital role community colleges play in opening doors, strengthening communities, and transforming lives. At Paris Junior College, we witness that impact every single day.
I was recently reminded of this in a deeply personal way when I received a phone call from a university president I had never met. She wanted to thank Paris Junior College for the path her son had taken. After a difficult first year at a university, he had decided not to return and had moved to a small town in our service area. Yet his desire to grow and succeed didn’t fade. He enrolled at PJC in our welding program and began a new chapter.
What followed is a testament to the power of community colleges. He discovered faculty and staff who believed in him, encouraged him to push his skills further, and challenged him to dream bigger. One English instructor inspired him to pursue a bachelor’s degree. This past December, he graduated from East Texas A&M University, achieving academic success and personal growth along the way. His mother shared something I will never forget: after her long career of working in higher education, it was PJC’s faculty and staff who reached her son in a way she could not. As a mother, she simply wanted to say thank you.
Stories like this illustrate that transformation often begins at community colleges. At PJC, we serve students at every stage of life, those just starting their educational journey, those returning after years away, and those seeking an affordable path to a four-year degree. We meet them where they are, helping them move forward with confidence, purpose, and support.
Across Northeast Texas, we partner with local employers in healthcare, skilled trades, and industrial technology, ensuring students gain in-demand skills while strengthening our region’s economic foundation. We also create seamless, affordable transfer pathways with universities statewide, making bachelor’s degrees realistic and attainable.
But the true value of a community college goes far beyond programs and pathways. It is seen in first-generation students who begin to believe they belong, working parents pursuing better futures for their families, and individuals who are given a second chance and turn it into a new beginning. It is found in encouragement, mentorship, and personal attention that transform potential into achievement.
Ultimately, the impact of a community college is measured not just in degrees earned, but in lives changed, families strengthened, and futures made possible. That is worth celebrating this month—and every day. At PJC, we are proud to open doors, guide journeys, and help every student feel at home, empowered, and ready to dream big. Make Yourself at Home at Paris Junior College.
