Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team continues an impressive streak of receiving the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, sponsored by INTENT, for the seventh consecutive year.
The Lions posted an overall team grade point average of 3.55 and advanced to the postseason for the 12th season in a row, as well as recording marquee non-conference wins over Alabama and UAB.
“I am excited about this team’s achievement in their academics. Being recognized with the AVCA Academic Award has put A&M-Commerce among some great teams within the volleyball community throughout the country,” said coach Joe Morales.
A&M-Commerce also received the Team Academic Honor Roll distinction, which celebrates the top 20 percent of GPAs of each division.
This is the seventh consecutive, eighth time in nine years, and 10th time overall in program history that the Lions have received this honor. A&M-Commerce is one of eight schools that competed in the Southland in 2023-24 to receive the honor.
Morales added, “Our staff encourages success in the classroom just as much as in the court, if not more. We want our student-athletes to excel and have success in anything they decide to do after their career with us. We cannot be prouder of their accomplishments year after year. It is the standard and part of our culture.”
The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale. Around the country, more than 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball teams were honored, which is a new record.
