A bill aimed at keeping those under the age of 18 off of social media has been filed by State Rep. Jared Patterson.
According to Patterson’s House Bill 896, social media users would be required to be at least 18 years old to create an account on social media.
“Once thought to be perfectly safe for users, social media access to minors has led to remarkable rises in self-harm, suicide, and mental health issues,” Patterson said.
Users on most platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are required to be at least 13 years of age to join, but require no proof of age.
House Bill 896 would require social media sites to verify a user’s age with a photo ID. It would also give parents the ability to remove their child’s account.
