At this time, the National Weather Service has no preliminary data about what size of a tornado struck Lamar or Red River County, nor as to exactly how much damage was done. However, a survey team is in route.
According to Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and Lamar County Emergency Management, the storm traveled north/northeast through Hopewell, Caviness, Beaver Creek and Powderly. At this time, there were about either 50 homes damaged or destroyed. At the time of the press release, late Friday night, there were only 10 people injured treated at Paris Regional Medical Center, two critical but stable.
According to a representative with National Weather Service, a survey team is in route to survey the damage to determine its strength, its width, the amount of damage caused and where it initially touched down.
State and local partners in Lamar County are currently assisting with storm response and evaluation. There will be multiple state and local agencies in the area over the next several days helping to assess, evaluate and clean up damage.
Law enforcement requests that if you do not live in the storm affected areas, please stay away.
