Scams are making their way around yet again as a reader made us aware of a phone scam they recently received.
The person on the other side of the phone, claiming they were with the social security administration, asked for the last four digits of their phone number. The fraudster claimed the individual’s social security number was being used to laundry money.
The reader did what was right and refused to give them the last four digits of their social security number. However, the person on the other end said they would suspend their social security number.
The reader then told the person “okay,” and hung up.
In situations like this, Paris Police Department Information Officer Curtis Garrett previously said, never give out any personal information.
“Ask to make an appointment to go to the office to clear up the matter,” Garrett said. “Get a name and telephone number of the person that is calling and tell them that you will call them back in a little while and that you are busy at that time. Any of these ideas will usually put them off their game and they will not cooperate with you.”
If you receive one of these scam calls or emails, do not provide them with any personal information, instead:
Hang up immediately;
For Social Security impersonations, contact Social Security’s Office of Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov/report
It is always best to hang up and never provide any personal information.
