Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II — the longest serving monarch in British history — has died. She was 96.
The Royal Palace announced the Queen’s death on Thursday afternoon (CST):
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Prince Charles automatically becomes Monarch.
