UT-Austin has a room so silent visitors can hear their own heartbeat or a ringing in their ears.
This anechoic chamber, which proves complete silence is possible, is filled with padding, and “has been acoustically tuned to have no reverberation, and no echo. It’s used to measure sound and data,” according to Texas Acoustics.
“Anechoic chambers are considered to be ‘the quietest rooms in the world,’” Texas Acoustics states. “When inside an anechoic chamber, the noise floor is very very low, meaning there is virtually no environmental noise. Without a noise floor, other sounds, such as your heartbeat, seem to be much louder than usual. Loudness is mostly a psychological phenomena. If a person stays inside an anechoic chamber for an extended period of time, it is possible to hear your own heartbeat.”
Some people find the room to be peaceful. However, others find it odd and unnatural.
