North Lamar ISD helps surprise Aussie girls with an experience they’ll never forget

For American school kids, riding in a “yellow school bus” is not a big deal but for two Australian girls visiting Paris, it was the highlight of their trip.

“They have never seen one before as we don’t have yellow school buses in Australia so they became fascinated with them,” said mom Janelle Spies. “They get super excited and squeal every time they see one now.”

Knowing 3-year-old Azalea and 4-year-old Myla Spies would love to see the school buses up close, Spies asked her sister Katie Dixon if there was any way she could make that happen.

Enlisting help from North Lamar ISD Police Chief Mike Boaz and Transportation Director Clint Hildreth, not only did the girls get to see a yellow school bus up close but they got to ride in it.

“They absolutely loved it and every time one drove by while we were riding around they’d squeal again.”

So, what do school buses in Australia look like?

“They’re more like Greyhound buses or coaches,” said Katie Dixon. “It is very rare to see a yellow bus in Australia and they certainly don’t look like the yellow buses here.”

Spies said the girls can’t stop talking about their excursion at North Lamar today and getting the chance to ride on a “big yellow bus”.

“While this seems so small to Americans it’s pretty exciting for us Aussie’s,” laughed Spies. “We are very grateful to Chief Boaz and Clint Hildreth for taking the time out of their day to give the girls this memory that they’ll never forget.”
