North Lamar High School Junior Caden Evans, who aspires to be an aeronautical/aerospace engineer, was selected by NASA to participate in its 2021 High School Aerospace Scholars Program.
“It gives me the chance to see what I think of the field,” Evans said about the program, which began for him on Nov. 1. “My mom told me about the program after we saw an article on 2 students at Paris High School that were selected 2 years ago and it sounded like it would go with my career choice. In the future, I want to be an aeronautical/aerospace engineer.”
Texas High School Aerospace Scholars is a STEM learning experience for Texas high school juniors to engage with NASA’s mission and become the next generation of explorers, according to NASA. Evans will complete an online curriculum in exploration and discovery.
The highest achieving students are invited to attend a five-day virtual experience plus a two-day onsite visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. Mentored by NASA scientists and engineers, students work in teams to plan a mission to the Moon and Mars.
Evans said he is excited about the opportunity to go to Houston and experience the 2-day tour of NASA.
“I hope that this program gives me a better understanding of what being an aerospace engineer entails,” he said. “I also am very excited about the courses which focus on traveling to the moon and mars.”
Evans said he plans to get a degree in Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M or at the University of Texas, “and would like to work at SpaceX or NASA, but have also wanted to work in a foreign country.
“I’ve always had strengths in both math and science and enjoy both,” he said. “So I decided why not choose a career that uses both of those.”
