Students in Honey Grove will step onto a brand new synthetic turf football field this year.

Over the past several months, construction crews have been busy upgrading Warrior Stadium with brand new synthetic turf, goal posts, black vinyl chainlink fence, concrete and more.

The new field carried a price-tag close to $1 million with 80 percent of the money coming via donation.

“Kevin and Jessica Mayberry generously entered a resolution with Honey Grove ISD to donate $750,000 to help provide a new turf football field at Warrior Stadium,” said Superintendent Todd Morrison on their website.

On February 20, the Mayberry’s presented Superintendent Morrison and the school board with a check for $300,000 and the remaining donations will come over the next two years.

The field will be utilized for football, Physical Education classes, marching band, pee wee football, as well as baseball or softball practice when their fields are wet.

“We missed a lot of practices last year due to the weather and the field being too wet and muddy,” said Head Football coach and Athletic Director Glen Schuelke, “this gives us so many more opportunities having synthetic turf.”

Practice on the new field begins Monday, August 5, with the first varsity football game scheduled for Sept. 1, against Whitewright.

“This field is not just for the High School football team, it’s for the whole community,” added Schuelke. “we’re very appreciative of the Mayberry’s for their generous donation.”

Hellas Construction was selected to provide the much needed synthetic turf. The District selected Government Capital Corporation as the most cost effective financing solution for the project.
