Government to pause free COVID tests on Sept. 2

The government funded free COVID-19 test program is set to be suspended Friday, Sept. 2 because “Congress hasn’t provided additional funding to replenish the nation’s stockpile of tests,” according to covid.gov/tests.

President Joe Biden in January committed to making 1 billion tests available to Americans through covidtests.gov.

Now, that program is being suspended after lawmakers balked at the $22.5 billion price tag requested from the Biden administration in March to buy vaccines and therapeutics to prepare for a fall spike.

According to reports, the program could resume if Congress provides the funding, but the remaining tests would otherwise be kept in reserve as officials prepare for the potential fall spike.

Tests will be able to be ordered until Friday, Sept. 2 but you should expect them to take a while to arrive as they are meant to be ordered ahead of time and stored for when you need them.
