Several Fannin County residents have taken to social media to warns others of a scam phone call they received that is “very scary” and “could go terribly wrong” if someone falls for it.
According to the posts, the caller states they are Chief McMurry with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office and that they missed a jury summons and would be arrested if the fine was not paid the day of the call.
“He then told her a specific address, 1741 N Hwy 121 in Bonham, to pay the $900 fine,” said a mother whose daughter received the call. “The caller knows a lot of your information. I do not know what will happen if you go to the meeting point, but they do know your location while you are talking to them.”
Fannin County Sheriff Mark Johnson said they have received several calls regarding the incident and that it is another scam and to not give out any personal information or meet the caller.
“The sheriff’s office will never call you asking for money, nor do we take any money at the sheriff’s office. Never give out any personal information over the phone, especially to someone you don’t know,” he said.
The number the man called from is 903-647-3203, according to the social media post, and if you call it back he will answer “Fannin County Sheriff’s Department Warrant Collections.”
“His voicemail says the same and is very convincing. We just want you all to be aware of what’s happening. The man knew my daughters location as she was driving and he hung up when she turned into the sheriff’s office.”
