‘Business in the front, party in the back!!’
Jax Crossland, 8-years old of Celeste, Texas, has been named a top 10 finalist in the USA Kids Mullet Championship.
“When we made the top ten Jax was beside himself with excitement and now he’s going for the gold,” said his mother Zoie Shepard.
Shepard said her son has been growing his mullet since he was a year old.
“When his hair started growing in it grew in little ringlets at the base of his neck. When he turned one his dad shaved his head and curls and I cried for weeks about it,” she said. “After that, I refused to cut his beautiful curls so a cowboy cut it was.”
By the time Jax turned two-years-old, Shepard said the mullet was “just him” and it’s been “growing in the back” ever since.
“By this point, Jax’s mullet is part of him and his personality. He loves it and he rocks it every day. I couldn’t imagine him without it! We could never cut it unless it was his choice of course but I’d cry for sure,” said Shepard.
Jax, who is in third-grade in Celeste Elementary School, first heard about the USA Mullet Championships through Dale Brisby; a western/rodeo public figure.
“We’re huge Dale Brisby fans,” said Shepard. “When they announced their kid’s competition how could we not enter? They posted over 120 kids from all over the country and when we made the top ten Jax was beside himself with excitement.”
If Jax were to win the competition, Shepard said he “really really wants a PS5” and that’s what he would spend the $500 prize on.

“Jax loves the spotlight and loves to make others laugh,” said Shepard. “Everyone who knows Jax knows he is one outgoing kid and we’re so appreciative of everyone voting for him and supporting him. This has been a crazy but amazing experience all at the same time. Jax is soaking up every second loving all the attention.”
