Cox Field will soon see a replica of Paris’ Eiffel Tower with its very own red cowboy hat, Paris City Council Member Clayton Pilgrim presented during Monday’s council meeting.
“There’s a lot of people who come from out of town that come in and out of that building daily,” Pilgrim said. “I think it would be a good welcome item to folks coming in for fuel or for business.”
Explaining the project will help get Paris’ name in a positive light on social media, Mayor Paula Portugal expressed her enthusiasm for the idea.
“We have a lot of people who’s contact with Paris, Texas, is Cox Field,” she said. “They’re gonna want to take a picture and put it on Instagram, Facebook, and it helps get Paris’ name out there in a positive light.”
The collaborative idea is to “better the airport” by putting a mini Eiffel Tower, “almost a direct scale model” in the airport’s terminal, matching what’s standing at Love Civic Center.
Pilgrim said the privately-funded project will cost between $12,500-$14,000.
“The reason I brought it to council to see if there’s any plus or minuses or if someone wanted to help raise a little bit of the money,” Clayton said during the Monday meeting. “Mainly wanted feedback if anyone had any, if not, it’s not an action item. Wanted everyone to be aware it’s a thought we’re working through.”
Pilgrim said the $14,000 will take about 5-7 donors total, and include a “nice small plaque” with the donors names included in the piece.
“I’m guessing that’s probably going to be some of our current proprietors at the airport who would be interested in that,” he said.
At this time, there’s no explicit timeline for completion.
