Shortly after it shared a controversial editorial and while more news is being consumed online, Clarksville Times announced it has published its last edition after 159 years, with the publisher stating they “have held on for a year with near impossible hours.”
“We worked together to make the Clarksville Times a respected publication,” publisher Patricia Antonelli said about herself and her late husband Lou in the editorial titled ‘This Is It – The End of an Era.’ “I have held on for a year with near impossible hours. I tried to make an informative publication …”
Antonelli, in the editorial, states two reasons for the Oct. 27 issue of Clarksville Times is the last.
“The primary reason is the fact that I am physically, emotionally, and mentally tired,” she said. “My heart is not in it anymore.”
She closed the editorial by stating she is in talks with two “interested parties to continue the legacy began in 1873.”
According to Census.gov, with digital media on the rise, access to news and entertainment has changed. In 2000, there were an estimated 55.8 million weekday circulation U.S. daily newspapers. In 2020, those numbers plummeted to 24.2 million.
According to Pew Research, average online visitors were about 32.1 million, an 11 percent increase from 2019’s 29 million.
