A stand-off in Honey Grove ended peacefully late Tuesday after a male subject barricaded himself inside a home for several hours.

At approximately 3:55 p.m., Chief Leigh Dixon and Officer Tel Pitcock went to 606 N. Sixth St. in Honey Grove in an attempt to serve a felony and a misdemeanor arrest warrants on Rodney Ray Terrell.

According to reports, upon contact with Terrell through a front room window, he refused to exit the residence or open the front door to the residence.

“Terrell was informed he had warrants and needed to exit the residence.  Officers immediately began hearing items being piled in front of the front door. At this point assistance was called from Fannin County Sheriff’s office, Pct. 3 Constable Kevin Mayberry and DPS Trooper Townes,” said Chief Dixon.

Upon arrival of assistance from these agencies, contact was again made with Terrell to no avail. Police say he then stated that he was not coming out of the residence and that he feared returning to prison.

Communication continued with Terrell until around 5:30 P.M. when he ceased all communication. Bonham PD was contacted and negotiator Lt. Lisa Hughes and Sgt. William Abbott arrived to assist.

“Prior to their arrival, Terrell shouted that he would have to be killed before coming out.”

Dixon said a call was then placed to Texas Ranger Brad Oliver and he was briefed on the situation before he advised he could mobilize the DPS Special Response Team to come and assist to make sure a peaceful resolution could be obtained.

The DPS Crisis Negotiation Team, Drone Unit and Special Response Team arrived throughout the next several hours.

“After numerous attempts failed to establish communications with Terrell, it was determined that the Special Response Team would approach the residence.”

At approximately 10:10 P.M. the Special Response Team was able to remove Terrell from the residence peacefully and he was taken into custody by Honey Grove Police and transported to Fannin County Jail without incident.

“I would like to thank the Pct. 3 Constable Kevin Mayberry, Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, Bonham PD, Paris PD, Texas Rangers, DPS Troopers, Bonham FD, Honey Grove FD and the members of Honey Grove Police Department for the professional job that was did to handle this situation and bring it to a peaceful end.”
