During a meeting of the PISD Board of Trustees on Monday, June 24th, the 2019-2020 budget was unanimously approved.

Included in the budget is a new teacher hiring schedule that ranges from $36,000 to $59,040, resulting in pay increases for teachers on each step of the scale. The minimum increase is $3,390 for a teacher with one year experience, and the maximum is $8,790 for a teacher with twenty years of experience.

“I’m thankful that legislators made strides to reward the most important profession in the state. Our teachers deserve this and so much more,” said PISD superintendent Paul Jones. “Through the actions of our lawmakers, PISD is able to compensate our teachers at a rate that more closely reflects the commitment, passion, and love for our students that define them. This will certainly help up attract and retain the most skilled educators, which our kids deserve.”

Jones is referring to House Bill 3, signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, which contains major reforms to public education, part of which includes teacher pay.

While House Bill 3 mandates raises for teachers, nurses, librarians, and counselors, the Board of Trustees took action which expands the scope of pay increases to other employee groups.

“PISD is a family, and our focus to make students successful requires a group effort,” said Jones. “Our administrators, secretaries, maintenance workers, bus drivers, teachers’ aides, and cafeteria workers all play vital roles in ensuring the well-being and development for our youngsters. The Board and I recognize and appreciate the efforts of every person involved in our educational community.”
