Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Friday via Twitter that he will be awarding the ‘Medal of Courage’ to Jack Wilson, the man who is credited with saving numerous lives during a church shooting in White Settlement back in December, on Monday, Jan. 13.

“On Monday, I will present the Governor’s Medal of Courage to the man who stopped a gunman in a deadly shooting at a church in North Texas,” Abbot said.

The medal is given to civilians who display “great acts of heroism by risking their own safety to save another’s life. It is the highest award given to civilians by the Governor.

Wilson rose to national and international fame after his quick thinking and precise reactions took down 43-year old Keith Thomas Kinnunen, who was identified as the shooter.

Kinnunen killed two congregation members during a Dec. 29 service.

Wilson, who is head of the volunteer security team at West Freeway Church of Christ, said after the event, “I don’t consider myself a hero at all. I did what I was trained to do.”
