Hola!  The aroma of fresh roasted Hatch Chile’s is expected to permeate the Farmers Market downtown Paris, Texas.

On August 31, 2019 beginning at 8:00 a.m. the Market Square located at 400 SW 1st Street,  the New Mexico experience of roasting hatch chile peppers will commence, and the public is invited to attend and learn more about the chiles that are a  huge part of the culture of the southwest.

Two Market Square vendors, Ron Preusse, the originator of the Hatch Chile Fest idea,  and Harold Cook from Cooks Farm and Ranch will be firing up their chile roasters around 7:00 a.m. in the morning to prepare for the largest Hatch Chile Fest yet.

“You can buy canned green chile but you can’t buy the smell of the fresh chile`  roasting, the feel of the charred skin or the incredible taste of a fresh roasted Hatch Green Chile,” says Ron Pruesse.

Ron and friends will be driving out to New Mexico just a few days prior to the event to pick up 2500 pounds of the freshest chiles available.

The day will be everything about hatch chile peppers. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. Main Street volunteers will serve slider-sized hamburgers and serve them on  Paris Bakery fresh-made buns topped with hatch chiles. The sliders will make a light snack and will be available while supplies last, donations accepted.

Back by popular demand Mariachi Quetzal, a mariachi band from Denton, Texas will add to the Southwestern themed day. The band will serenade patrons from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Quetzal has played at various venues in the Dallas/Forth Worth area and has won a Dallas Observer Music Award for best Latin group.  Their music delights the market patrons and adds a flair to the day.

Other items to expect though out the day starting at 9:00 a.m. include chile themed items from participating vendor tables, snow cones,  some piñatas as well as fun kids games.

Volunteers are needed to assist with helping roast and bag chiles and chaperone kids games. Every volunteer receives a bag of hatch chiles to take home.

There are also volunteer opportunities to cook and serve burgers for the public. A sign-up genius form has been created and can be found at the following link, https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a094fabae29a02-hatch1

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 5 years since we planned the first event,” says Cheri Bedford, Market Manager. “It’s a fiesta, and you won’t want to miss it. We’ve signed up new vendors, actually so many we have had to create an overflow area in the parking lot.”
