George Elder Moore, 92, of Paris, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Brentwood Terrace Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center.

Bright-Holland Funeral Home has scheduled graveside services for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18th, at English Cemetery in Red River County with Rev. Ken Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Moore, the son of Street Lawson & Carrie Leola Elder Moore, was born May 31, 1926, in Dallas.

He served four years in the U. S. Navy during World War II on the SS 398 Segundo submarine as a machinist and gunner. The Segundo sank a Japanese transport ship with over 3000 Japanese soldiers on board near the end of the war.

George worked forty-five years for Texas Power & Light running the power plant at Talco, Texas. He loved guns and served as treasurer for the Paris Skeet & Trap Club for forty years. He was an avid Browning Over & Under shotgun collector. In 1991, he won the 28 gauge Texas Championship Skeet Shoot in Waco by breaking 99 straight and 24 doubles. In 1991, he won the National 12 Gauge Senior World Skeet Championship in Savanna, GA by breaking 446 targets in a row. George has been featured in The Paris News on several occasions. He leaves behind many loving friends at the Paris Gun & Skeet Club.

He served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Clarksville from 1957 – 1965, and at First Baptist Church in Paris from 1965 – 2003.

In 1946, he married Mary Fleming Bailey after church in Clarksville, and they immediately left on a bus for San Diego to serve in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Mary preceded him in death in 2003.

He is also preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Michael Hutchins and a sister, Virginia Bowers.

Survivors include three children; Tessa DeVance & husband Robert of Allen, Vicky Renfro of Reno and Cherry Somers & husband Jim of Hot Springs Village, AR, four grandchildren; Brandon Hutchins & wife Jennifer of San Marcos, Clint Hutchins & wife Amber of Paris, Matthew DeVance & wife Dana of Dallas and Kristi K. Pratt & husband Stewart of Billings, MT, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren along with several nieces & nephews and a host of friends.
