Detroit ISD plans graduation ceremony for May 29

Ensuring to follow TEA guidelines, Detroit ISD said Thursday they still plan to host a graduation ceremony on May 29.

“Please understand that this can change at any time as the situation changes for our area during the Covid-19 closure,” said Jonathan Lloyd, High School Principal. “We have put our plan in place based on federal, state, and county guidelines.  We are very thankful they are allowing us to proceed with this plan.”

The graduation ceremony will continue on the original date and time of Friday, May 29 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Detroit Eagle Football Stadium.  This date is only permissible under the state’s guidelines, if the number of active covid-19 cases stays at a certain level in the county.  If weather is not conducive or we receive guidance from the state, graduation will be moved to Monday, June 1st at 6:00 P.M.   You will be notified if that change takes place as soon as we know.  I wanted both dates to be posted to allow families to start making arrangements now.

Participation is voluntary.  If you would rather receive your diploma by mail, you can certainly do so.

“Our Graduation Ceremony will be live streamed on Facebook.   A recording will be available to all graduates and family members that do not attend in person.  If you cannot attend at that the planned time, it will be on our website for later viewing.”

The regulations placed on the school do not permit an open graduation.  Each graduate will be given tickets for a limited number of people to attend.

“We are anticipating 6 tickets per family but that could increase or decrease due to the number of cases in our county. All ticket holders for a graduate will be seated together and should be comfortable with that arrangement.  We are a small school with a small stadium and we have to follow state guidelines.”

The final number will be communicated next week after measurements are taken and the plan is finalized.

All ticket holders will be screened, answer a questionnaire, and have a ticket with them or they will not be permitted in the stadium.  If you have fever or symptoms or have been exposed, please stay home.   If symptoms are present upon your arrival, you will not be allowed to enter the stadium. There are no exceptions.

Social distancing and safety measures will be put in place in accordance with state regulations.

Graduates will receive further instructions and be asked to attend a virtual meeting prior to graduation.

“Since we cannot hold a practice, we will share information with the students in the virtual meeting.  At that time, we will address any questions and go over the finalized plan.  Please remember that these plans and dates could be changed at any time due to federal, state and local guidelines.”
